Quebec has adopted a bill that will legalize assisted suicide, the first legislation of its kind in that nation.

Under the new bill, patients would have to repeatedly ask a doctor to end their lives on the basis of unbearable physical or psychological suffering.

They would also have to be deemed mentally sound at the time of the requests.

Canada's federal government says it could challenge the law. Assisted suicide and euthanasia are illegal under the country's criminal code.

The government insists it has no intention of changing that.
