Terrorism is on the rise, according to a new report from the London-based Institute for Economics and Peace.

The global study found there were close to 10,000 terror attacks in 2013 -- that's 44 percent more than the year prior. The attacks resulted in nearly 18,000 deaths.

The organization's Global Terrorism Index reported four groups -- the Islamic State, Boko Haram, al Qaeda and the Taliban -- dominated the attacks and were responsible for 66 percent of the fatalities.

The report named Iraq as the country most affected by terrorism, with 2,492 attacks that killed more than 6,300 people. The Islamic State group was responsible for "most" of the deaths in the country.

The report said more than 80 percent of the deaths from terrorist incidents were in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Syria.
