New details on the death of Peter Kassig, an American aid worker in Syria, are beginning to emerge.

A Paris prosecutor says a French convert to Islam appears in the video showing the beheading of 26-year-old Kassig.

The executioner has been identified as Maxime Hauchard, 22.

Hauchard, who converted to Islam at age 16, appeared in a French television video last July. He said he helped ISIS capture the Iraqi city of Mosul.

French authorities say Hauchard has been on their radar since he left for Syria in 2013 under the cover of humanitarian aid.

Meanwhile, the main jihadist who taunts the West on the video is believed by his accent to be British. And one British father thought he recognized his son among the unmasked men in the video.

Still, French citizens make up the largest contingent of European jihadi fighters who have joined ISIS in Syria and Iraq.
