The president of Turkey claimed Muslim sailors came to America more than 300 years before Christopher Columbus.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Islamic leaders from Latin America that Muslim sailors reached the American continent in 1178 -- 314 years before the Italian explorer.

"In his memoirs, Christopher Columbus mentions the existence of a mosque atop a hill on the coast of Cuba," Erdogan said.

But scholars dispute that entry, saying there's no archaeological evidence of Muslims living in the Americas before Columbus.
