Cuba is getting its first new Catholic church in 55 years.

The communist government is allowing construction of the new cathedral, which is funded by donations from Catholics in Tampa, Florida.

The church in the western town of Sandino will hold about 200 people.

Cuban church officials say it's a sign of improving relations between the Vatican and the Castro government.

Cuba was an officially atheist state for decades and the Church suffered intense persecution.
