As the United States and Cuba work to restore full diplomatic relations, many hope the same policy shift will happen in Iran.

The United States and Iran haven't had formal diplomatic links in more than four decades, when Iran's Islamic Revolution engulfed the country.

Twitter is serving as a sounding board for people to voice their opinions on the matter.

Trita Parsi, with the National Iranian American Council tweeted, "Obama: We should not allow U.S. sanctions to add to the burden of #Cuba citizens we seek to help. Also true on #Iran"

In a televised White House statement Wednesday, the president announced steps to re-establish a U.S. embassy in Havana, restoring diplomatic relations with Cuba broken in 1961.
