A former State Department diplomat says allies of Hillary Clinton were part of a cover-up of the September 11, 2012 terror attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, according to a new report from Daily Signal contributor Sharyl Attkisson.

Former Deputy Assistant Secretary Raymond Maxwell, who was head of the agency's Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, was in charge of collecting emails and documents relevant to the Benghazi investigation.

He said Clinton's chief of staff and other allies removed documents that would cast a "bad light" on anyone involved.

The report reveals the operation happened "after hours" over a weekend in a basement office of the State Department.

"I was not invited to that after-hours endeavor, but I heard about it and decided to check it out on a Sunday afternoon," Maxwell said.

Maxwell told lawmakers privately last year about the operation, but this is the first time he's publicly revealed the story.
