Indonesia's Mount Slamet volcano began violently erupting Friday morning, scattering ash over surrounding villages in central Java.

There are seven villages only four miles from the volcano. Officials have made preparations to move the nearly 24,000 residents in case the volcano becomes more dangerous.

The eruptions started several days ago, but have grown increasingly violent.

Java is Indonesia's main island. It includes the capital, Jakarta, and is home to more than half of the country's 240 million people.
