Thousands of new illegal immigrants are failing to report to deportation hearings, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

The agency recently disclosed that 70 percent of immigrants who entered the country during the summer have not reported as ordered and instead vanished into the interior of the country.

Republican lawmakers have criticized the practice of releasing any immigrant caught crossing the border illegally.

"With this administration's failure to enforce our immigration laws, it is no surprise that 70 percent of the families released take their chances to stay here and don't show up for their follow-up appointments or court dates," House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Defense is expanding an existing program that would allow a small number of undocumented immigrants to join the military.

The program will be open to immigrants without a proper visa if they came to the U.S. with their parents before age 16.
