Voters in Scotland are heading to the polls Thursday to vote on whether to secede from England.

The countries united 307 years ago, and Scots are divided over whether to stay or go.

"Basically we can still have the back-up of the United Kingdom, which will give us the security we need in a globalized world," voter David Wood said.

Tom Stone, another voter, shared the same opinion.

"I just don't believe that the 'Yes' campaign was convincing enough about how it could go wrong. So they had all the best cases, but not the worst cases," he said.

Others are pushing to secede.

"It's a great dream to start in a new country, with a new sheet, with a multicultural country. It's not about nationality, the vote. It's about a place being able to look after itself," voter Will Lorimer said.

"I voted yes," another voter, who stayed anonymous, said. "I think after 300 years we're due a change and it can't be any worse than this government."

High turnout was expected at the polls Thursday since 97 percent of those eligible to vote are also registered, which is about 4.2 million people.
