Muslim Brotherhood's Morsi Sentenced to 20 Years

An Egyptian court has sentenced ousted Islamic President Mohammed Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood, to 20 years in prison.

The punishment stems from violence outside the presidential palace in 2012 when Morsi's supporters attacked opposition protesters, sparking clashes that killed at least 10 people.

Muslim Brotherhood member Mohammed Soudan said the ruling verdict was "100 percent a political verdict."
    
"Morsi, his advisers and supporters who are accused in this case were victims ... police and army officers watched as the opposition attacked the presidential palace," Soudan told Al Jazeera.

This is the first verdict issued against Morsi. He and thousands of other Muslim Brotherhood members are set to face several trials after the military overthrew Morsi in 2013.
