Boko Haram Islamists slit the throats of more than a dozen Christians in northeast Nigeria.

The Islamic State-affiliated militant group killed 16 Christian fishermen last Monday on Lake Chad in Nigeria's Borno state, according to the Italian website for Catholic Charity Aid to the Church in Need.

The the head of the fisher's union in Borno state, Abubakar Gamandi, said the attack happened in the villages of Bundaram, Fishdam and Dwatar Mali.

"Boko Haram decided not to use guns so as not to attrack the attention of soldiers from Baga," Gamandi told the AFP. "This is why they used knives to slaughter their victims."

Communications in the area are difficult because Boko Haram has destroyed mobile phone masts, which means attacks often go unreported for days.

The group has killed thousands of Muslims and Christians in Nigeria and is responsible for the kidnapping of hundreds of schoolgirls from the Christian village of Chibok last year.

Boko Haram attacks in and around Chad have increased as the terrorist group is trying to avenge the government's intervention against the group in the region.
