Boko Haram reportedly has killed hundreds of people in a deadly assault, possibly up to 2,000, after overrunning a military base in northeast Nigeria.

The BBC reports that almost all of Baga town was torched Wednesday and bodies were left rotting in the streets.

"I escaped with my family in the car after seeing how Boko Haram was killing people ... I saw bodies in the street. Children and women, some were crying for help," Mohamed Bukar told Reuters.

Boko Haram is working to establish an Islamic government in the northeast region of that country.
