Gunmen at Libya Hotel Take Hostages, Eight Dead

Libyan security officials say gunmen stormed a luxury hotel in Tripoli, killing at least five foreigners and three guards, and taking several people hostage.

The Corinthia Hotel is the same establishment where Libya's former prime minister was kidnapped in 2013.

European Union Foreign Affairs Chief Federica Mogherini called the attack "another reprehensible act of terrorism which deals a blow to efforts to bring peace and stability to Libya."

"Such attacks should not be allowed to undermine the political process," she said in a statement.

The hotel incident comes as a U.S. House committee holds its third public hearing on the 2012 attacks on the American embassy in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead.

There's little hope, however, of bipartisan cooperation.

Democrats say they've been excluded from crucial steps in the investigation while Republicans accuse their left-wing colleagues of playing politics.
