EU Extends Economic Sanctions against Russia

Russia will continue to feel the pain of economic sanctions over the Ukraine crisis as the European Union agreed to extend penalties on the nation's energy, defense, and financial sectors for another six months.

The move comes as Russia announced it was adding 40 new intercontinental ballistic missiles to its nuclear arsenal. NATO called the move "destabilizing and dangerous."

Meanwhile, in a show of force and support for Baltic nations, some 15,000 troops from 22 countries are taking part in NATO exercises not too far from one of Russia's most important naval bases.

NATO said its intentions are clear: they are ready, willing, and able to respond to any treats within its territory.

"What we have done in this exercise is exactly responding to, and our way of being ready for, this kind of irresponsible rhetoric (referring to Russia)," Gen. Philip Breedlove, NATO's supreme allied commander, said.

"We see these kinds of words, normal and responsible nuclear powers don't act like this, don't talk like this," he continued. "And for that reason we find our reason to be out here exercising as we have here."

The exercises will last for one month.
