America's military launched airstrikes targeting a top al Qaeda leader in eastern Libya.

Mokhtar Belmokhtar is charged with leading the deadly 2013 attack on a gas plant in Algeria that killed 35 hostages, including three Americans.

The Pentagon says its airstrikes likely killed the al Qaeda leader and the Libyan government agrees.

But an Islamist in Libya says the strike missed Belmokhtar, instead killing members of a group that was behind the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.
