The president of Vanuatu is calling for help after Cyclone Pam ripped through the country, killing at least eight people and injuring at least 30 others.

President Baldwin Lonsdale said the storm has wiped out all of the developments from recent years.

"This is a very devastating cyclone. I term it a monster that has hit Vanuatu. It is a setback for the government and for the people of Vanuatu. All the development that has taken place has been wiped out," he said.

Lonsdale said his country will have to rebuild everything. Communications are down so officials can't confirm how widespread the damages are.

"I am very emotional. Everyone has that same feeling. We don't know what happened to our families. We cannot reach our families; we do not know if our families are safe," Lonsdale said.

"As the leader of the nation, my heart hurts for the people of the whole nation," he said.
