Iraqi military forces have retaken a strategic town from ISIS.

Government officials say Iraqi troops, backed by Shi'ite militiamen, entered the town of al-Alam Thursday morning and hours later gained full control.

Al-Alam is about five miles north of Tikrit, the former home of Saddam Hussein, where some 20,000 Iraqi troops and Shi'ite militias were heading next.

Analysts say if Iraqi troops can recapture Tikrit, it would provide momentum to retake the northern city of Mosul, the largest city held by ISIS jihadists.

Iraqi troops and the Shi'ite militia, called Hashid Shaabi, along with the Kurdish Peshmerga forces and aided by U.S.-led coalition airstrikes are impacting the battle against the Islamic State.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday the Senate will question three of America's top security officials about new war powers to fight ISIS.

Democrats and Republicans have yet to agree on a strategy.
