Libya's state-run oil corporation says 11 oil fields in the country are now closed down after a series of attacks by Islamic State jihadists.

The National Oil Corporation said that despite pleas for the authorities to ensure the safety of Libya's oil installations, "theft, looting, sabotage, and destruction" of the oil fields has been on the rise.

The company announced a "force majeure" at the 11 oil fields, a clause in contracts to protect relevant parties from liability in situations such as this.

Libyan Oil Minister Mashallah al-Zewi told The Associated Press residential and administrative buildings were blown up at the Dahra oil facility before the attackers left.

"They surrounded the site from three different directions, and when guards ran out of ammunition, they stormed the place, looted everything, and then bombed the buildings, leaving them in ruins," he said.
