The owners of a bakery in Northern Ireland who refused to bake a cake supporting same-sex marriage say they will appeal their conviction for discrimination.

The Christian owners of Ashers Baking Company were convicted last week after refusing an order for a cake from a gay rights activist.

He asked for a cake featuring the Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie, with the words "support gay marriage."

A judge in Belfast ruled that the bakers discriminated against the activist's sexual orientation and ordered the bakery to pay $765 in damages.

Members of the family that own the bakery say they will appeal.

"We have done nothing wrong as we have discriminated against no individual but rather acted according to what the Bible teaches regarding marriage," they said.
