A deadly heatwave is sweeping across India. The scorching temperatures are responsible for the deaths of more than 500 people.

Many of the fatalities happened in the country's southern states and poorer sections of the country.

"The majority of the victims are people who have been exposed to the sun directly, usually aged 50 and above and from the working classes," ABC News quoted P. Tulsi Rani, special commissioner of Andhra Pradesh's disaster management department.

Priti Choudhry is regional director of CBN India, based in New Delhi. She spoke more with CBN News Producer Steve Little about the heat wave that's killed more than 1,000 people this month.

Temperatures in some areas are reaching near 120 degrees Farenheit. The heat has prompted fears of power cuts.

Taxi unions have urged drivers to stay off the roads between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. because of the sweltering heat.

Authorities are urging people to remain indoors and stay hydrated.

"We are asking them to take precautions like using an umbrella, using a cap, taking a huge quantity of liquids like water and buttermilk, and wearing cotton clothing," Rani said.
