Kurdish fighters have captured a strategic road in northern Iraq, cutting off one of the most important supply routes for ISIS.

The Kurdish Regional Security Council says Peshmerga fighters have reached Highway 47, which links the Islamic State's two biggest strongholds: Raqqa in Syria and Mosul in Iraq. The council said they've reached the highway in two different areas.

"[Peshmerga] troops are holding their position, waiting for reinforcements and more airstrikes so they can then move into the center of the town," Maj. General Seme Busal, a commander on one of the front lines, said. "Airstrikes have been very important to the operation getting to the point where it is now."

Some 7,500 Peshmerga fighters are part of the offensive to retake the strategic town of Sinjar, which sits along Highway 47. ISIS captured Sinjar in August 2014 not long after they seized Mosul.

ISIS frequently uses Highway 47 to transport goods, weapons and fighters.

The Kurds are being backed by U.S.-led airstrikes.
