America and Russia may unite in the fight against the extremist threat in Syria.

Presidents Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin are embarking on a tentative path toward closer ties and possible military cooperation.

This move comes despite the two countries' bitter rift over Ukraine. It also follows months of Obama accusing Putin of  propping up Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Obama now calls Putin a "constructive partner" in the work to end Syria's civil war. Putin is calling for America and Russia to "stand together" against the Islamic State group.
