President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet face to face Monday for the first time in nearly a year at the United Nations summit.

The two are at odds over Russia's military incursions in Ukraine and its growing military presence in Syria.

"We're just at the beginning of trying to understand what the Russians' intentions are in Syria, in Iraq, and to try to see if there are mutually beneficial ways forward here," AFP quoted a senior State Department official. "We've got a long way to go in that conversation."

The United States has slapped heavy economic sanctions on Russia after its annexation of Crimea and support for rebel forces in Ukraine.

Now, Russia is sending military equipment to help bolster Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad.

The Obama administration said there is little hope of progress on those issues, but it would be a mistake not to talk with Putin.
