German authorities arrested two Algerian men suspected of having ties to ISIS and planning a terrorist attack on German soil.

Police conducted a series of raids in Berlin and a refugee home in Attendorn.

Berlin police told AFP that the jihadists "are under investigation over suspicions that they are planning a serious act threatening the security of the state."

Two of the four suspects connected to the investigation were arrested, one of whom was evading Algerian authorities for his connection to the Islamic State. Authorities believe he trained in terror tactics in Syria before coming to Berlin.

Berlin police spokesman Stefan Redlich said two of the suspects tried to disguise themselves as Syrians. Syrian refugees receive the most liberal asylum policies than any other nationality.

The other two suspects were not asylum seekers but lived and worked in Berlin for as long as 15 years.

The recent raids compounds fears and fuels the debate over the consequences of Germany's acceptance of more than 1.1 million asylum seekers a year.

Germany is still trying to monitor the growing threat of terrorism after the Cologne New Year's mass rape attack where thousands of women were sexually assaulted.

Although Germany has not experienced a deadly Paris-style attack, security officials still worry that Germany remains a target for jihadists.
