Studio 10: A New Order in the Court

Fresh from his Senate confirmation, new Chief Justice John Roberts will preside over the new session of the Supreme Court set to open on Monday. He will be leading the Court into a turbulent swirl of social topics ranging from abortion to gay rights to the right to life.
Critics believe Roberts’ ascension sets the stage for a contentious battle between President Bush and Democrats over his next judicial appointment to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Democrats have indicated that whomever Bush selects could be headed for a turbulent confirmation process.
This is undoubtedly a critical time in the history of our nation. The current High Court will be making decisions with such far reaching impact that it will affect generations to come.
Specifically, the Bush administration wants the Supreme Court to reinstate a national ban on late term abortion. This particular case could open the doors to re-examining the potential for overturning Roe v. Wade.

Craig Parshall is a trial attorney who argues civil liberties and constitutional rights cases across the country. He has represented clients before state supreme courts, federal circuit courts, and the U.S. Supreme Court.
