RELATIONSHIPS

Who's Your Valentine?

By Julie Ferwerda

CBN.comSingle and think you just can’t be happy until you find intimate love on this earth? Jesus wants to write a love story for you, but don’t miss this. A marriage or romantic relationship on this earth is not your love story. It is only a detail in your love story—a minor ingredient.

Say you made a batch of chocolate chip cookies. You put in flour, butter, sugar, salt…all the usual stuff. You bake them; pull them out of the oven, and say, “Man this salt is good. It really makes these cookies what they are!” That would be crazy.

In this world, your life is like that cookie—made up of all kinds of ingredients that all together make it what it is. Jesus is the cookie-maker. He’s the One putting the right amount of this and that into the mix, putting it in the oven for just the right amount of time, and making sure that, in the end, good tasting cookies have every opportunity to happen.

In the same way, a man or a woman that you might share your life with is just a small ingredient in your life, but not what gives your life purpose, shape, and flavor…not what makes the details of your life come together to make you into someone unique and special. Jesus is the only One who gets the credit for the adding, the making, and the baking.

Jesus is your love story. You won’t ever have a love story on this earth until you turn to Him alone for love, acceptance, meaning, and hope. If you try to look for those things in a person, you will always be disappointed. You will set yourself up to be left wanting more. No person on this earth can fill you up or make your dreams work out. People were never meant to complete us. Only Jesus can do those things.

There are a couple links on this page to some ingredients in my own love story (see “Another Life Changed”, and “A White Rose, a Candle, and an Ogre?”). Even since writing those articles, my life has continued to unfold like a great love story in ways that have nothing to do with my earthly husband, and everything to do with my True Love and Valentine, Jesus. My earthly love, Steve, did not arrange these details for my life—Jesus did. To give a man credit for this part of my amazing love story would be a great error. My love story was not fulfilled or finished when I met Steve. He was just “the salt.”

When you come to this realization and feel satisfied with Jesus alone, only then can you enjoy this unique, amazing, miraculous life that God wants to write for you—your love story with Him.

Where to go from here:

Are you facing this Valentine's Day with loneliness? Have your dreams for being loved and having an exciting purpose led to disappointment and unfilled longings? Before Jesus can be your love story, He has to be invited. Ask yourself, “Is my life what I want it to be? Do I want a good and loving God, One who understands my needs and desires, to BE my love story?”

Surrender your life—everything about yourself—to Jesus. That is the beginning. Jesus can’t be everything you’re hoping Him to be until you make Him your number one love and surrender everything to Him. Jesus has already gone all the way for you at the cross—the ultimate love gift—now it’s your turn to go all the way for Him. He’s waiting for you to make the next move.

Do you want something better than what you’ve been living? Do you want an exciting adventure full of surprises and incredible hope? You’re never too old, broken, or used up for this kind of a love story. Jesus is ready and willing to take all your regrets, failures, and lost dreams and to make something new and inspiring out of your life—with or without an earthly love. It’s never too late. Let Jesus BE “The Love Story” of the rest of your life.
