Encourage Your Children To Ask Questions

By Kimberly Snider

CBN.com - "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding" (Proverbs 4:7, NIV).

Do you want your kids to be smart? Then encourage them to ask questions, and don't get impatient when they do.

I know how little boys can be when they want to know how something works. I understand how little girls can be when they ask "why" over and over. But questioning minds are intelligent minds. Truthful answers, answers that make sense, cause children to learn to reason and understand cause and effect. Asking questions is the natural way children learn.

Sometimes we get tired of answering obvious questions. But our answers will encourage children to keep asking, and if they keep asking, they will keep learning. They will gather information, put information together, and draw conclusions about life. This will increase their knowledge and give them confidence in themselves and in you.

I overheard a wise mother on the bus the other day say, "Child, you have asked me three times how buses run. I can tell you are really interested, but I don't know how gasoline runs an engine. You know, your Uncle Jose is a mechanic. We will ask him on Sunday to draw you a picture. Let's think of some other things together that your uncle can explain to you about engines."

That little boy is going to be an executive some day! And the mom--she gets an A+!
