10 Great Date Movies

By Hannah Goodwyn

CBN.com Saving money is at the top of most people’s list when planning their dream wedding.  But just because you are pinching pennies doesn’t mean you have to forgo “date night” with your fiancé.  Even though dinner and a new movie at a local theater may not be in your budget, a quiet dinner in and a rental are great for couples who just want to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

Listed below are 10 movies that you can enjoy on your “date night.”  From new releases to great romantic comedies and classics, to some you may not be familiar with, this list has it all.

Great Date Movie Picks:
(listed in no particular order)

Hitch: (2005) Date Doctor Alex Hitchen (Will Smith) tries to help his clients get the women of their dreams.  But things begin to fall apart when his identity is revealed in a New York City tabloid. Also starring Kevin James, Amber Valletta, and Eva Mendes. This hilariously fun movie proves that it is always best to just be yourself – even if you are trying really hard to impress someone. Rated PG-13 for language and some strong sexual references.

Fever Pitch: (2005) Priorities cause a rift between baseball fanatic Ben Wrightman (Jimmy Fallon) and workaholic Lindsey Meeks (Drew Barrymore). Their relationship grows even rockier they must decide what is most important to them. Sports and love – this brings it all together in a good romantic comedy. Rated PG-13 for crude and sexual humor, and some sensuality.

Some Like It Hot: (1959) Two jazz musicians (Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon) witness the St. Valentine's Day Massacre in Chicago and have to skip town before the mob kills them. Their hilarious escape leads them on a wild ride to joining an all-girl band headed for the sunny Florida. Also starring Marilyn Monroe. Love triangles abound – along with all the swingin’ music and gangster plots from the ‘20s you can enjoy. Rated PG.

Notting Hill: (1999) Hollywood leading lady Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) and British travel bookseller William Thacker (Hugh Grant) just happen to bump into each other. They quickly fall in love, but their different lives and Anna’s actor boyfriend get in the way. This has to be one of my favorite romance movie picks of all time; it must be on your movie list. Rated PG-13 for sexual content and brief strong language.

It Happened One Night: (1934) Socialite Ellie Andrews runs away from her powerfully wealthy father to marry King Wesley, a society aviator. But she finds some obstacles along her bus route from Florida to New York, namely Peter Warne, a reporter who is secretly trying to get her exclusive story. If you are not used to black and white movies, try and look past the no-color factor to enjoy one of the best romance classics. Unrated.

Sleepless in Seattle: (1993) In an attempt to find a new mother, Jonah puts his depressed father, Sam, on a national radio show to talk about the recent loss of his wife. Thousands of women write to him, including Annie, who is engaged, but feels a pull toward getting to know Sam. This is the absolute best of the Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan romantic comedies. Rated PG for some language.

Charlotte Gray: (2001) Desperate to find her boyfriend, a pilot who was shot down over World War II France, Charlotte joins the Secret Service. Behind enemy lines, circumstances aren’t exactly what she expected they’d be, including her new friendship with some of the locals fighting in the French Resistance. Starring Cate Blanchett, Billy Crudup, and Michael Gambon. Rated PG-13 for some war related violence, sensuality and brief strong language.

Say Anything: (1989) Lloyd Dobler (John Cusack) thinks the intelligent and beautiful Diane Court is enchanting. The summer is just beginning, but he’s only got a bit of time to convince her of his love before she leaves for a scholarship in England. Also starring Joan Cusack, Ione Skye, and Jeremy Piven. Ohhhh… so many classic scenes come to mind – you just have to watch it to know that this is a keeper. Rated PG-13 for language and mild sexual situations.

The Notebook: (2004) Young Allie Hamilton (Rachel McAdams) must chose between her fiancé, whom everyone - including her parents - adores, and her first love, a poor guy from the wrong side of town. Also starring Gena Rowlands, James Garner, Ryan Gosling, and James Marsden. Based on Nicholas Sparks’ bestseller, this beautiful story will touch both of your hearts. Rated PG-13 for some sexuality.

Just Married: (2003) Newlyweds Sarah and Tom’s honeymoon is riddled with so many problems and fights they are ready to split up with they return home. With everyone against the relationship, they must decide what do with their new spouse. Just Married is a surprisingly great flick with tons to laugh about. Starring Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy. Rated PG-13 for sexual content, some crude humor and a brief drug reference.
