Where the Grass is Greener

CBN.com – I had an interesting discussion with Noe Torres, who handles my yard work. His dad lives in a Mexican city of about 50,000 residents. Like many people who have relatives here, his dad has been used to waiting each week for the check from his sons who live and work in the United States.

Noe and his brother are true entrepreneurs and began to look for opportunities to help their dad be more self-sufficient. Their dad has always had a dream of having a little ice cream shop there in Mexico. So Noe purchased a couple of small freezers at Home Depot here for $150 each and took them down to his dad. He then built a 40x80 warehouse and purchased a machine that makes 2,500 popsicles in 8 hours.

They make ice cream and stock these little freezers with popsicles and ice cream goodies. They then offered to place them in Mom and Pop stores around the city. No money required—they simply come back the next week, restock the freezer, and split the proceeds from anything that has sold.

At this point they have 23 freezers in place. The store owners love it and Noe's dad is living out his dream. He is also employing about 10 grandchildren, who are now making their own money for school clothes and supplies by helping to stock and deliver the freezers.

The average daily income in this city is $10-15. Mr. Torres is currently making about $150 a day and they are projecting that will grow to $500/day by the end of this year. A whole family has been removed from the expected "welfare" system and a new generation is learning the principles of work and managing money with an opportunity right in their own backyard.

Rejection, Rejection

I get a lot of notes from people who are devastated by not getting a job after an interview, or by getting 20 rejections from publishers for a great manuscript.

Here's a helpful tip: The next time you get a rejection letter from a hoped-for employer, just send them the following:

To Whom It May Concern:

Thank you for your letter of May 22, 2007. After careful consideration, I regret to inform you that I am unable to accept your refusal to offer me employment at this time. This year I have been particularly fortunate in receiving an unusually large number of rejection letters. With such a varied and promising field of candidates, it is impossible for me to accept all refusals. Despite [Name of the Company]'s outstanding qualifications and previous experience in rejecting applicants, I find that your rejection does not meet with my needs at this time.

Therefore, I will begin employment with your firm immediately, starting this next Monday at 8:00 AM.

I look forward to working with you.
