Suddenly I Took Action

By Dan Miller
48days.com

CBN.com Be sure to check out the piece on RoadTripNation below. Many Baby Boomers settled for careers that created income but did not connect with passion or meaning. This young generation coming into the workforce today will never put up with that. They demand a clear sense of purpose in anything they are going to do. Some of us can learn from – or be re-inspired by -- their honest searching. Enjoy the process, no matter where you are on your life’s journey.

We’ve got an Ultimate Fresh-Start Package – materials that will help find and release your passion, for only $48.

" If there is no passion in your life, then have you really lived? Find your passion, whatever it may be. Become it, and let it become you and you will find great things happen FOR you, TO you and BECAUSE of you."—T. Alan Armstrong

Isaiah’s Wise Words

I heard Joel Osteen use a Scripture reference recently that jumped out at me. In Isaiah 48:3 it says: “Long ago I told you what was going to happen. Then suddenly I took action, and all my predictions came true (New Living Translation). What a great concept! How many people are just waiting for God to do the miraculous in their lives – and then are disappointed when nothing changes. The bills don’t get paid, the job promotion doesn’t come through, and the dreams die unfulfilled.

But here’s a solution to all of those challenges and more – “then suddenly I took action, and all my predictions came true.” How great is that? Instead of waiting, moaning, complaining, or hoping the right political candidate saves the day, just take action. What is it that you would like your future to bring – a better job, a business of your own, better health, more money, a completed book, a car of your dreams, or living in another part of the world? Are you just waiting, wishing, and hoping? Or are you taking action?

OK, this year is ticking by. Maybe you didn’t get the jump start on 2008 that you wanted. But now we’re looking ahead at ‘09 already. You have plenty of time to plan, and start acting, before January 1st even rolls around. I have a Goal Planning overview all ready for you: just click through – it’s a free worksheet – you can print it, copy it, or whatever you want. But whatever you do, make absolutely sure you decide what action you will take to make ‘09 the year your dreams come into view.

RoadTripNation

Saturday afternoon the now famous 36-foot green RV with the RoadTripNation crew aboard rolled back our long country lane here in Franklin, Tenn. They are making the ‘08 trip from California to Maine and wanted to talk with my son Jared – who lives in Rwanda but is currently here in Nashville. What an interesting group. Three long-time buddies graduated from college and began asking the common question "what do I want to do with my life?" They are now interviewing people who have found their passion. They were determined to expose themselves to more than just the traditional life roads. Like the original RTN gang, they hopped in a green RV and hit the road to talk with inspiring people from all walks of life to find out how they came to do what they love for a living.

Roadtrip Nation has evolved into a PBS series, three books, an online community, and a student movement. PBS sends people on the road who are interested in exploring the world outside their comfort zone, talking with individuals who chose to define their own road in life, and sharing their experiences with our generation.

I was blown away by their Manifesto – written on the back of the bus:

“So, what do you want to do with your life?
You should be a lawyer, a doctor, an accountant, a consultant
….
Blah, blah, blah.
Everywhere you turn people try to tell you who to be and what to do with your life. We call that the noise
…Block it…Shed it..
Leave it for the conformists..
As a generation, we need to get back to focusing on individuality.
Self-construction rather than mass production.
Define you own road in life instead of traveling down someone else
’s. Listen to yourself.
Your road is the Open Road. Find it.
Find the Open Road.

This young generation is not content to live out traditional work lives while missing meaning, purpose, and fulfillment. They are determined to connect their passion and calling to what they do each day. What about you? Have you found your open road, or are you stuck on a dead-end street?

Better Resume
I have been approached by several companies over the last few years that did video resumes. But the logistics made them cumbersome and, frankly, unappealing. Here’s a new visual resume that seems to be heads above anything else I’ve seen. You can use it free of charge – and create a fresh up-to-date presentation that represents you as prepared, polished, and successful. The VisualCV makes a traditional resume come alive with video, pictures, and samples of your work. You can even share different versions with potential employers and control who sees what. If you want to put yourself at the front of the line, check out VisualCV.

Turning Point Pens
I spoke at the Men v. Wild Men’s conference here in Nashville. After talking about being “fully alive,” I had several guys approach me with their own unique stories. One of those was Matt Newton of Turning Point Pens. Matt makes exotic pens with a story behind them. His biggest success was making historic pens from the old oak pews from the original Grand Old Opry. He’s also made pens from the 500-year-old oak tree under whose branches Jefferson Davis used to read and study. You can also find pens from naturally shed elk antlers. This is just another example of a common idea with a unique twist that adds significant marketing leverage.

212ºConnection
If you’d like to be a group where you can get inspiration for taking your ideas to a whole new level, check out our 212ºConnection. Every day new people are becoming part of the exciting group, sharing ideas and gaining momentum. You can read all about it here – and see the growing numbers who are turning their ideas into time, freedom, and income.

—Amiel

“If passion drives you, let reason hold the reins.”
—Benjamin Franklin
