Christian Leadership to Change the World
Camp Counselors: Leadership Through Mentorship
CBN.com Each month, we showcase the unsung leaders of the community; those individuals that practice leadership daily yet are often unrecognized for the roles that they hold. The following spotlights demonstrate that leadership can, and does, come from anywhere, and from anyone in the world.
A trip to summer camp is a rite of passage for many children. Whether a day camp, a weeklong overnight camp or a camp that lasts the entire summer, children of all ages benefit from the social, recreational and educational opportunities that these different camps provide. But these camps don’t just happen. They are the result of much effort and dedication on the part of the leaders who organize and execute them. Camp counselors — many of them volunteers — choose to forego other opportunities in order to invest in the lives and experiences of children. They serve as the mentors, teachers, friends and leaders to countless children all summer long.
Did you go to a summer camp when you were young? How did your counselors shape your experience? Did they help ease your anxiety about being away from home? Help you grow in your understanding of your faith? This month, as the children of your friends and family (and perhaps even your own) head out to a wide variety of camps, take a moment to appreciate the counselors who make their experience one that they’ll remember fondly for years to come.
