Sherri Shepherd
Co-Host, The View
CBN.com Whether you know her as a Daytime Emmy-winning host on The View or for her recurring role as Tracy Jordan’s wife Angie on the critically acclaimed sitcom 30 Rock, Sherri Shepherd has certainly made her way into the homes and hearts of television audiences everywhere.
Despite a string of recent successes, her road to stardom was far from easy. Sherri struggled with a cycle of bad relationships, a troubled marriage ending in divorce and, after leaving the Jehovah’s Witnesses, her religious beliefs. But after reaffirming her faith in 1993, she gained new perspective in her career and in her life. Today, she relies on laughter—but more importantly, on her relationship with God—to help her through everyday obstacles.
On using faith to address tough issues on The View:
“It was and is a very scary thing to do… Here’s a subject and I don’t know what to say. It’s prayer… of going, ‘What am I supposed to say? Use me. I’m not too sure about this topic.’ Doing The View for me, because it’s so out of my comfort zone, is really going, ‘Lord, where I’m weak, you’re strong. Every single day… Or saying, ‘Here’s a battle coming up. You’ve got to pray with me.’”
On how God guides her as a single parent:
“Now I have my son. And I love him so much. And I look at the Lord and go, ‘Do you love me this much that you gave me this little boy?’ And then he’ll have a tantrum and I’ll go, ‘Do you love me that much? What am I supposed to be learning here?’”
On finding her faith:
“I never had a relationship with the Lord. And then in 1993, my mother had diabetes and she was just slowly dying, and I had family members who were on drugs, and I was just so depressed. I really wanted to kill myself…. And I remember I said, ‘I don’t know who I’m talking to… if you could just send somebody to help me, because I’m just swimming out here.’ I was just so depressed. And it was not even a week later, I met with somebody who talked with me about Christ.”
