My Thoughts on The Secret

Don't believe everything you read, especially if it contradicts the Bible.

This book has gotten a lot of press. It’s a best seller and some of you wanted us to talk about it.

Old idea, new Da Vinci Code-like packaging.

She takes a Biblical starting point and twists it. The Law of Attraction is basically you are what you think. But here are some of the major twists.

In The Secret, she says you are your own god. On page 164, she says “You are God in a physical body.” She goes on to say “You are master of the Universe. (pg. 183) She even uses one of the Names of God, I AM, and says we should use it to describe ourselves. (pg 164).

In The Bible, it’s about doing God’s will. In The Secret, it’s about doing your will.

The Bible teaches us to take every thought captive for Christ: “We break down every thought and proud thing that puts itself up against the wisdom of God. We take hold of every thought and make it obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:5, New Life Version).

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:2, NASB)

In The Secret, your thoughts are supreme. In the Bible, God’s thoughts are above our thoughts.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. ( Isaiah 55:7-9 New International Version)

In The Secret, if bad things happen to you it’s because you’ve attracted it. All I could think of was the Holocaust.

On page 28, she says “Often when people first hear this part of The Secret they recall events in history where masses of lives were lost, and they find it incomprehensible that so many people could have attracted themselves to the event. By the law of attraction, they had to be on the same frequency as the event.”

In the Bible, clearly bad things do happen to good people (ex. Job) We don’t control everything.

In The Secret, it’s all about “the Universe” There is no talk of a personal God. One who deeply cares about you.

The Secret takes positive thinking to an extreme - if you want to lose weight, avoid looking at overweight people. The Bible puts it in a more compassionate perspective:

Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (Philippians 4:8 NIV)
