Girls find hope in Promise House
Posted: July 11, 2008

EL SALVADOR - Raped. Pregnant. Abandoned. Alone. This is the trauma that has trapped untold numbers of girls in El Salvador in a cycle of despair and fear. The lucky ones wind up in a government run institution. I say "lucky," because they have a bed to sleep in, a roof over their heads and food to eat. However, the numbers are daunting and the institution is crowded with needy, abandoned kids. There is only so much the government can do.

Terry gives a gift to the 11 year old and her baby.

We made the trip to San Salvador, the capital of El Salvador, for a very special reason. Orphan’s Promise has partnered with an effective and locally established organization called Orphan Helpers who operates a ministry called Promise House, Promise House is a safe home for young girls and their babies.

A loving, committed staff teaches the girls how to be good mothers and care for their babies while they finish school. Counseling and help with healing are a regular part of life in this love-filled home where the girls learn that someone really does care about them.

Teen pregnancy is not a new dilemma. Even here in the United States it is common. But these girls have been abused repeatedly by men in their own families.

The youngest girl we met is 11 and her baby is four months old. Children raising children! It shocks the senses.

Promise House is a place where these girls can find healing, hope and a vision for the future. You are making it possible for Orphan's Promise to offer these wounded young girls a new beginning and a safe place to raise their children. Thank you so much.
