The young boy stood before us, quiet and shy. His dark skin was beautiful and flawless. Then he smiled and the world lit up. There was something special about this child. When Christopher first came to the MICS school he was 12. An orphan, now living as a chore boy and donkey herder in his "uncle's" house, he had never been to school and couldn't read or write. The public school refused to accept him at this age. When he came to MICS they too felt it was impossible for him to catch up. Yet, on the first day of school, there he stood with the others knowing he would have to begin with the four and five year olds, but refusing to be denied. In two years, Christopher has moved up to the 4th grade and speaks English. His determination is almost tangible. His biggest dream was to be a "boarding child" at MICS so he could study and feel like he belonged. Tears flowed all around when we surprise him with the news that Orphan's Promise wanted to sponsor him. Today he is one of the first eight children boarding and studying at MICS. Christopher has a whole new life.
