Afghanistan
A country embroiled in years of struggle, Afghanistan is now center of the struggle with the Taliban, a ruthless regime that rules with an iron fist. Under Taliban rule, women have no rights whatsoever, and Islam is the rule. Since the fall of the Taliban in 2001, the economy of Afghanistan has improved, primarily due to an influx of foreign dollars related to the struggle.
Afghanistan is an extremely poor country, highly dependant on foreign aid. Most of the population continues to struggle and suffer from shortages of housing, potable water, electricity, medical care and jobs. The government’s inability to extend the rule of law to outlying communities has left a large portion of the population in the worst of conditions.
The numbers of orphans are at a staggering amount of almost 2 million!
Landmines are another serious problem, especially in agricultural areas.
Orphan’s Promise is supporting a special project, a center helping over 3,000 women. This project provides finances for education and nutrition for 6,000 orphans and other vulnerable children.
