DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo)

Established in 1908 as a Belgian colony, the DRC gained independence in 1960. A nation of vast potential wealth, DRC is just now slowly recovering from 32 years of brutal rule under Mobuto who was toppled in 1997. Over 5 million people died in the DRC during those very turbulent years of iron-fisted rule.
Like so many countries in this continent, the Congo has experienced huge losses of life from AIDS. AIDS orphans are a rapidly growing segment of the population. With poverty ruling so many, the problems related; health, homelessness, orphaned and abandoned children, and starvation are almost overwhelming.
Orphan’s Promise is supporting the Center for Orphaned and Sexually Abused Girls in the provincial capital, Goma (run by our Norwegian partner, the Dina Foundation.
