Peru
Once the home of the Incas, a highly functioning society, Peru is now home to poverty and strife. After years of military rule, Peru returned to a democratically elected government under Alberto Fujimori, only to have his government experience its own share of internal problems.
In recent years, Peru has experienced a strong economic growth; however this growth has not been felt by a large portion of the population.
While unemployment is at 10%, underemployment numbers are much higher, and poverty is a wide-spread problem.
Like other Central and South American countries, Peru has a large number of orphaned and abandoned children, street gangs and serious violent crime.
Orphan’s Promise has begun helping orphaned and at-risk children by assisting in providing for hydroponic gardening, and working with two orphanages through a local church. In a partnership with YWAM, Orphan’s Promise is also working on establishing a sewing and embroidery center for street kids, to teach them marketable, life-sustaining skills.
