Sudan
Another of the former British holdings, Sudan gained its independence in 1956. Since that time, military regimes favoring Islamic-oriented governments have dominated the country.
Two prolonged civil wars between Muslim and Non-Muslims has resulted in the deaths of between 200,000 and 400,000 citizens. Sudan has a life expectancy of less than 55 years for both men and women and 40% of the country is illiterate.
Sudan is experiencing a growth in their orphan population due to on-going insurgency and HIV/AIDS. Poverty is wide spread, and diseases related to polluted water and other infectious diseases are an on-going problem.
Sudan is also a point of trafficking in human life with men, women and children susceptible to forced labor and prostitution.
Orphan’s Promise is supporting a Christian school operated by an in-country ministry dedicated to helping children in this impoverished nation.
