Somaliland

A former British colony, Somalia was given its independence from Britain in 1960. This was followed by a strong socialist government that ruled until it was toppled in 1991. The country has experienced some growth and stability in recent years, but poverty is still one of the country’s major problems.

It is estimated that there are over 25,000 people living with HIV AIDS in Somalia.

Long-term internal conflict and insurrection have left many homeless throughout the country. There are a large number of orphans, but an actual count or even an approximate number is just not available.

Orphan’s Promise has installed a water and sewage system for one orphanage at present and is looking at other ways to help these children.
