South Africa
South Africa is a middle income country with an abundant supply of natural resources. Years of racial segregation and strife led to a change in government and a more open society for many. In 1994, the first interracial elections effectively ended apartheid in this country.
Long a nation known for gold and diamonds, both of these industries are strictly controlled by only a few corporations and workers are exploited. Even with the trade in gold and diamonds, poverty is a rampant and growing population in the cities as well as rural areas.
Estimates are that there are over five million people living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa. As a result of this, there are an estimated 3.5 million orphans currently in the country.
Orphan’s Promise is currently supporting two orphanages and micro-enterprise projects through our local CBN staff, providing them with a brick making machine and starting projects to tech them self-sufficiency.
