CBN.com - In Poroshkovo, Ukraine there is a gypsy camp where thirteen people live inside a tent. 7 year-old Ruslan is one of them. There is also a two-month-old baby. Ruslan is wet to the core because it’s a cold rainy day. This little family is doing their best to make a living. Their dad is making baskets out of pieces of twig that he has gathered from the woods. Their mom is out gathering mushrooms so she can bring some food home for her children. The goal of Orphan’s Promise is to build a home for them that will take them out of the cold, out of the rain and allow them to make it through the winter and maybe even have a good life here in Poroshkovo.

Working with our CBN staff in Ukraine, Orphan’s Promise was quickly able to put together a plan to build a shelter for this family. The most efficient and timely solution was a house made of metal with a strong wood floor and a thick layer of insulation. An airtight window and door, along with a new wood-burning stove makes this one of the best homes in this gypsy community. And some basic furnishings and warm blankets will keep this family comfortable all winter.

We were alarmed at the condition of the two-month-old baby boy who had a terrible cough and fever. His mother was so malnourished that her nursing efforts were just not enough. That day we gave her formula and medicine for little Petro. And now he is no longer sick, has put on weight, and looks much healthier. In fact, everyone looks healthier and happier. In addition to the father’s basket making we have plans to help them with a garden or other livelihood to bring in enough money to sustain the family.

In the midst of all of this, they were a little bewildered who would go to such great effort to help a family of gypsies. Pastor Evan, from the local church, was able to talk openly about his faith and why God cared enough to bring someone to help them. The family has started attending the church.

“I thank God for the help you have given us,” says grandmother Larissa. “I couldn't even dream that someone would give us such a house. Thank you!”

The real change for this family will be in the months to come as they learn more about God’s grace and love and experience His ongoing provision for them.
