CBN.com – "I have always dreamed of becoming an international cricket player. God willing, that dream will come true," says 23-year-old Afsar of Bangalore, India.
He is a young man with big dreams. But it may surprise you to hear that he is physically challenged. Afsar’s right leg was amputated below the knee several years ago after injuries led to an infection in his ankle. But that didn’t slow him down for long. He received a prosthetic limb and was able to play cricket in a league for the physically handicapped.
"My first tournament was in Hyderabad, where we made it to the finals. I played again in the second tournament in Vijayawada. There, we won the finals, and I won the most valuable player award."
Over the next two years, Afsar excelled in his league and won many other awards. He used part of his prize money for surgery to repair nerve damage in his mother’s wrists. It seemed that his dreams of making the national handicapped team and supporting his family were finally coming true.
But Afsar’s hopes came crashing down when his prosthetic foot broke. A new, hi-tech foot costs over $400—six months earnings for Afsar before his injury. He could barely even afford to pay his mother’s medical bills.
Then Operation Blessing heard about Afsar and his family. They gave him a new prosthetic foot, knowing it would make a huge difference for his family.
'I have my new foot now, so I’ll be able to run from wicket to wicket. I’ll work hard," he says.
