CBN.com —U.S. Navy Chief Melissa trains sailors to operate missile vertical launch systems on board ships and she's hoping her son Kaleb will follow in her footsteps. Juggling a naval career and family is especially hard on Mel because she is a single mom.
"There's no one else to fall back on if he gets sick at school to go pick him up and, you know, make the doctor's appointments."
Mel learned it's about to get tougher. She'll soon deploy oversees for a year.
"It's a huge sacrifice to leave your kid behind and to be out there, it's like a part of you is missing."
While she's gone, her mom will care for Kaleb at Mel's home. But her house needs thousands of dollars of home repairs. The leaking roof caused water damage and mold and mildew. There are cracks in the drywall and baseboards, and the carpet is ruined. There are also poorly insulated doors and windows.
Kaleb and his grandmother will have to live with the issues because Mel doesn't have the money to get the work done and didn't want to take out a loan.
"That would be another bill. That's earning interest on money that I don't have as it is."
Point Harbor Community Church contacted CBN's Helping the Home Front to ask if CBN would help. We agreed to pay for everything!
Chaplain Mitch stopped by with the news for Mel and her family. "We are going to take care of it. We want so badly to be an encouragement to you. I see how hard you work to take care of other people and you're always encouraging people at church. We're not going to stop here. This is just the beginning."
CBN hired myPRO, and in a few days contractors tackled every issue. Damaged flooring came up and new laminate installed. They also fixed cabinets, drywall, baseboards, and the water damage. Now Mel can deploy and leave her mom and Kaleb in her remodeled home.
