CBN.com — Rajkumar and Gouramma work hard as day laborers in southern India to take care of their two sons.  One evening, when they returned home, they were shocked to find that their five-year-old son, Amit, had injured his right eye.  He accidentally punctured it with a syringe he found in the neighbor's trash.

His mother, Gouramma, exclaimed, "We were so scared when we saw Amit's eye bleeding.  We took him to a doctor and he gave us some medicines.  But the next day, my son told us that he couldn't see out of his right eye."

A traumatic cataract had formed in Amit's eye, but his parents couldn't afford to pay for surgery to remove it.

"We felt so bad that we couldn't help our son," said Gouramma.  "Then the headmaster at Amit's school told us that Amit couldn't go back to school until he got his eye fixed.  But we barely make enough to feed our family."

They went to several hospitals looking for help, but every time they were turned away.  Then they found a hospital that partnered with CBN.  The doctor told them that Amit would get a free operation.

Dr. Sybil explained, "When I examined him, he had a perforation in the cornea, as well as a traumatic cataract.  He needed surgery to remove the cataract and put an artificial lens in the eye."

The day after the surgery, the bandage was removed.  Soon, he was able to see clearly and go back to school.

Holding Amit in her arms and seeing him smile as he looked into her eyes, Gouramma said, "Thank you CBN for helping Amit get his sight back!  You have not only given him clear vision, but you have also given him a future."
