Like many moms in Laos, every day Khammy has to go collect water from an open pit or “dug well” in her village. She makes that trip up to six times a day to get enough water for washing, drinking, and cooking. But every time she goes there, she remembers what happened to her young son. The boy was only 3-years-old when he accidently fell into the open pit well while helping his mom.
“I immediately jumped into the well and grabbed him before he could drown,” Khammy told us. “My heart was beating very fast. There was no way for us to climb out of the well. It was very deep and too slippery.”
Khammy clung to her son and the side of the well until her husband arrived to help.
“When I saw him, I knew we would be safe,” she said. “I was so happy my child was alive.”
After that fateful day, Khammy never allowed her son or any other young children to go near the well again.
As the years passed, the water from the dug well became unsafe and Khammy had to boil it before they could drink it. So when CBN offered to dig a new, safer “closed” well with a pump near her home, Khammy was relieved.
“I am very happy we can have clean water for washing and cooking anytime. I can even get water at night without worrying,” she added. “And I’m no longer anxious about the safety and health of my children.”
And because the water from the CBN well is so plentiful, Khammy has been able to plant a vegetable garden near their home. This gives them extra food and another source of income.
“I am deeply grateful to CBN. I wish you good health and long life,” said Khammy.
