Every morning, Zhi Xiang watched other children in his village leave for school and wondered what fun he’d miss out on that day. He should have been in the 4th grade, but wasn’t able to attend class. Zhi Xiang was born with a serious heart condition.
He recalls, “I really wanted to go to school and play with the other kids, but I didn’t have any energy to even walk there. I got tired very easily.”
Zhi Xiang’s father died in an accident and his mother abandoned him, so he went to live with his poor, 71 year old grandfather.
Grandpa Tian is frail himself, but he’s done everything he can to provide for Zhi Xiang. He even borrowed books and tried to teach his grandson skills he should have been learning at school. “I didn’t want him to be illiterate,” Grandpa Tian says. “Or he’d end up without hope for his future.”
But there were days it was hard for Zhi Xiang to even eat his soup. And as Zhi Xiang got weaker, it became evident that without surgery, he would die.
“Zhi Xiang is so young he shouldn’t die! He should live,” exclaims Grandpa Tian. “I love him, he is everything to me. But I personally didn’t have any money to pay for heart surgery. Even when I borrowed money from relatives, it still wasn’t enough!”
Just when Zhi Xiang and his grandpa were about to give up, a doctor came to their village and told them about CBN’s mission to save children’s lives.
Grandpa Tian remembers the day well, “I couldn’t believe it! Neither could my relative. We had never heard of such a wonderful thing anywhere in the world!”
CBN quickly arranged heart surgery for Zhi Xiang. A doctor repaired the hole in his heart and re-positioned his artery.
The surgery was a success. “I’m strong now,” Zhi Xiang says confidently. “Before I couldn’t jump, and now I can jump high! And I can run! I like playing with my classmates and even doing my lessons!”
Grandpa Tian concludes, “I’m really happy to see Zhi Xiang so healthy, even if he is a little naughty and climbs up the wall from time to time. At least now he can go to school, and I don’t have to worry about his future at all. Thank you to CBN for bringing my family hope!”
