Deadly Flooding Affects Thousands in Niger

By Operation Blessing International

NIGER– In a country that has been wracked by famine, deadly flooding is now threatening the survival of thousands.

According to reports, 31 people have been killed and an estimated 100,000 left homeless by the rising floodwaters. The Federal Ministry of Environment predicts more heavy downpour through the end of August and warned about continued flooding.

"Floods are affecting all regions of the country," said Modibo Traore, head of the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs in Niamey.

CBN’s Operation Blessing has been responding to Niger’s famine, operating 17 food banks throughout Niamey to bring critical relief to families in times of severe drought and famine.

In Sarando, teams have also been running a drip irrigation garden project—where families can raise vegetables year-round to supplement their diet.

Sarando is now one of many areas largely underwater. The entire village, at least 2,340 people, had to be evacuated as houses were broken down and crops and fields were destroyed by the waters.

Currently OBI staff is responding to aid these families affected by the severe flooding.
