The Gift of a Brighter Future: Haiti 5 Years After the Earthquake
When a massive earthquake struck Haiti five years ago today, an already struggling nation was left devastated. Operation Blessing, with a field office in Haiti, was a first responder in the aftermath—strategically targeting both large and small needs.
In the wake of the disaster, the future of so many hung in the balance, including dozens of young children struggling with disability who had been abandoned and had been living in a small room at the general hospital in Port-au-Prince well before the earthquake. With the hospital overwhelmed with injured earthquake victims, the children were at risk of being forced out of the only shelter they had known.
Through the generosity of partners like you, the people of Haiti have been blessed over the past five years through safe water initiatives that have provided millions of gallons of safe drinking water, innovative food security solutions to end hunger like fish farming that have provided thousands with the nutrition they need, and education for vulnerable children thanks to new schools in severely impoverished regions. OBI teams have also distributed millions of dollars' worth of medicine to hospitals and clinics treating cholera, chikungunya and more.
And thanks to a joint effort from Operation Blessing and Partners in Health to open Zanmi Beni Children's Home, the future of those children from that Port-au-Prince hospital is much brighter. The children's home, whose name means "Blessed Friend" in Haitian Creole, has become a safe haven for these children and others who have been orphaned or abandoned.
Five years ago, these children were languishing without even a place to call home, but just last month each precious child received an official birth certificate and legal name during a special baptism ceremony.
